《Splendid Calligraphy Work --- A Rubbing Exhibition》

This exhibition is a special display donated by Mr. Shao lizi.

Chuan Tuo, also known as Zhui Tuo, is an ancient traditional Chinese art. It uses paper and ink to beat and print out the characters and patterns carved on cast objects. The rise of epigraphy in early Song Dynasty promoted the development of the skill of Chuan Tuo. In the Qing Dynasty, under the influence of textology and epigraphic calligraphy, it became a common practice for literati officials to collect, sort and study rubbings.

Shao Lizi, formerly known as Shao Jingtai, was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, whose style name is Zhong Hui, and pseudonym is Feng Shou. He is a famous democratic personage, social activist, statesman and educator in modern China.

In 1937, Mr. Shao Lizi donated more than 50,000 books and inscription rubbings to Tianshui. Among them, the rubbings are now collected in Tianshui Museum, mainly including communications, Buddhist statues, Zhongnan mountain Taoism, epitaphs of Shaanxi celebrities and some famous inscriptions. This exhibition selects some rubbings with high cultural connotation and artistic value of calligraphy for the audience.
